Five Colleges, Incorporated (Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts Amherst) seeks applications for a three-year, three-quarter time, Five College Visiting Assistant Professor in Art and Technology with duties shared between Hampshire College and Smith College for 2015-2018. Hampshire College will serve as the home institution.

We seek a practicing artist/educator whose work bridges arts and technology to become a part of the Studio Arts Program at Hampshire, which is based in the School for Interdisciplinary Arts, and the Art Department at Smith.

The successful candidate will bring an approach to exploration, creation, scholarship and teaching that furthers collaboration among the arts, applied technology and science programs—one that frames the use of advanced electronic and computer technology in the service of conceptual and formal concerns. We encourage applications from studio artists working in sculpture, installation, and/or new media, with strong technical skills who can teach a broad range of courses including interactive media and electronics, as well as theme-based critique seminars. We especially encourage applications from artist/educators whose practice is interdisciplinary and has both physical and screen-based aspects.

A Master of Fine Arts from a studio art or interdisciplinary program, or a terminal degree in art and technology or related field is required. Additionally, at least two years of college level teaching experience beyond a teaching assistantship is preferred.

Teaching and service expectations for the Five College Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Technology are:  at Hampshire, teach one studio course each semester, serve on divisional committees and exams and supervise student independent projects commensurate with the expectations of a half-time faculty member; at Smith, teach one studio course each academic year and supervise student independent projects.
