Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an access control/switchboard operator for the office of campus safety and security.

Reporting to the lead supervisor of campus safety and security, the access control/switchboard operator will answer incoming phone calls for the campus safety and security during the academic semester and during college breaks or curtailed operations.  The access control/switchboard operator will provide routine assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors; maintain and monitor access control of fire alarm systems, keys, OneCards, parking decals, library/lab after hour’s keys, and college pool vehicles; oversee lost and found property; and perform other duties as assigned.      

High school diploma, GED or equivalent is required with a minimum of two years job-related experience. Qualified candidate must have knowledge of security practices on a college campus, including answering phone calls for service, dispatching, operating card access system, monitoring parking program and general safety practices. Must possess outstanding verbal and written communication skills. Successful candidate will have the ability to work  with a wide variety of campus offices and personnel to effectively intervene, and resolve issues and conflicts that arise in conjunction with campus safety;  maintain a calm, collected, and patient tone with callers in crisis; and apply a compassionate approach when dealing with the College community in person, over the radio and on the phone.  The access control/switchboard operator must be able to exercise discretion when obtaining and providing factual/confidential information, as well as maintain confidentiality and exercise judgement. Candidate must be able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.
