Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a skilled professional of the highest integrity for vice president of student affairs and dean of students.

Reporting to the President and serving on the Senior Leadership Team, the vice president for student affairs (VPSA) provides leadership, guiding vision, and thoughtful and confident strategic direction for the College’s division of student life. The division includes the dean of student’s office and all departments responsible for student services and the quality of students’ co-curricular experience. The VPSA works in partnership with the President and vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty to identify, develop, and advance resources and staffing that support alignment with the College's student-driven and experiential learning model.

The VPSA serves as the chief advocate for students and is able to engage with ease and humility on issues of sexual, racial, cultural, and gender identity, social and economic justice, and other values of importance to the campus. The VPSA will be a strong proponent of the values of an inclusive community which include mutual respect, collegiality, and the College’s commitment to social justice and anti-racism. 

The VPSA is a pivotal campus leader in moments of crisis, the final arbiter on issues of conduct and discipline, and an authentic champion of student needs and achievement. The VPSA ensures that programs and services are strong and relevant to current and emergent issues facing college students, and align with the implementation of the new student experience in fall 2020. 

Fundamental to the role at this point in the life of the College is to collaborate with a committed and strong student affairs staff to reimagine and develop a student life division that fosters community and ensures thoughtful support of all students through awareness of trends and the development of programs and approaches that increase retention and distinguish the Hampshire experience beyond the classroom. The VPSA's advocacy role extends to identifying and allocating resources needed for requisite and continuous delivery of services and programs, and speaking on behalf of staff and students to college leadership and trustees.

A terminal degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and teaching is required. A minimum of ten (10) years of professional work, with increasing responsibility, in the field of student affairs or direct engagement with students including teaching is preferred.  Qualified candidates must have a record of working with colleagues and students in a spirit of partnership, transparency, and care. Candidates will have a proven commitment to the academic, emotional, and social development of all students; knowledge of current trends in student affairs; and a successful history of supervising and mentoring others, engaging in student life on a residential campus, embracing a team approach, and working effectively across a campus community.  The VPSA is expected to have strong organizational, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds.
