Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for assistant dean of students and director of first year experience in the student life division.

The assistant dean of students and director of first year experience (FYE) manages the FYE office and provides vision, strategic direction and accountability for the planning and implementation of high impact practices in academic and student life programs and support services for incoming and new (first-year and transfer) students. Duties include but are not limited to: leading the development of a communication and branding plan for the first year experience; independent management and planning of all programmatic and logistical operations for FYE orientation programs (August and January) including all initiatives coming from the FYE office, and their design, support, and implementation. Collaboratively develop new initiatives between the Center for Academic Support and Advising(CASA)and student life to provide a comprehensive first year experience to students and specifically support efforts toward holistic academic advising; to help students navigate the academic program in relation to their life outside the classroom; assist in the development and implementation of goals and objectives for the dean of students office; co-design and co-facilitate ongoing training for first-year student faculty advisors and teaching assistants; and oversee the development and implementation of ongoing strategies for reducing attrition of new students before and after they matriculate, in collaboration with the admissions office, the office of alumni and family relations, CASA, and student life. This position holds supervisory responsibilities.

An advanced degree with a minimum of three years of job-related experience is required. Successful candidate must be extremely skillful with project development and management, be able to handle multiple tasks at one time, and to plan at least 12 months in advance. Candidate must be skillful and experienced in working with college-age population; demonstrate leadership in bringing multiple parties together to produce shared outcomes; be able to manage ambiguous situations; and to discern situations that necessitate confidentiality and be able to maintain their confidential nature. Proficiency with computer systems including Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint and InDesign; managing and utilizing social media applications and other forms of digital communications is a must. Excellent verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills are also required. Strong expertise in working with a diverse population is essential. The assistant dean/director must be able to effectively present to groups, have previous supervisory experience, and be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
