Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution, is seeking a knowledge commons alumni fellow to join the Knowledge Commons in the Harold F. Johnson Library. This is a one-year, grant-funded position with possibility of continuation dependent on future funding.
The knowledge commons alumni fellow, reporting to the associate librarian for humanities and knowledge commons, and in collaboration with the knowledge commons team and director of library and knowledge commons, will support the development of the Knowledge Commons Peer Mentoring Program. The knowledge commons alumni fellow will develop peer mentors as a community of practice providing holistic academic support within the knowledge commons (KC). The fellow will coordinate the fall 2018 Peer Mentoring Pilot by hiring, training and supervising a small cohort of peer mentors for the knowledge commons. They will work closely with the associate librarian for knowledge commons to recruit for, develop and offer a course on peer mentoring to be offered at Hampshire in the spring of 2019. The fellow will also conduct outreach, promotion, assessment, and communications activities related to the peer mentoring program and the knowledge commons in general. They will also assist with knowledge commons space use and maintenance, and lead the development, pilot and implementation of a system to welcome students to the knowledge commons (e.g., a greeter or concierge). In the fall, the position will focus on supporting mentoring, course planning, and KC space maintenance. In the spring, the position will include a focus on the mentoring course, and hours will likely shift in conjunction. This position requires working Sundays through Thursdays 1-9 PM. During summer months and school breaks, hours shift to Mondays-Fridays 8:30-4:30 PM.
A recent bachelor’s degree from Hampshire College, awarded between May 2014 and May 2018, is required.The ideal candidate will have experience with several of the following skills: Recruiting, hiring, supervising and training Hampshire students as peer mentors for the knowledge commons; offer academic support using the holistic, relational, critical pedagogical model practiced in the knowledge commons; building functional, and collaborative working relationships with staff and student employees as colleagues; and assessing services and programs offered in the knowledge commons. Good writing skills, social media strategy, interpersonal skills, project management, organization skills, self-motivation as well as demonstrated commitment to inclusive and anti-oppressive teaching, learning, and research practices is crucial. Experience with software such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Google Drive, WordPress, InDesign, Photoshop is required. Candidate must successfully work across generations (i.e., working with much older colleagues) and bring kindness, respect, and empathy into the workplace. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds, and empowering students of all abilities is essential. The candidate must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
