Pay Range/ Status: $90,000 - $98,000 / Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Vice President of Finance and Administration, Treasurer

Anticipated Start Date: June 1, 2022

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The controller directs and coordinates all accounting and recordkeeping related functions within the College, including oversight of monthly reconciliations and financial closing processes, annual audit process, annual nonprofit tax return process, cash flows, banking, investments and endowment accounting, fund accounting, financial statement preparation and general ledger maintenance. The controller directly oversees the staff accountant, financial analyst and the senior accountant, ensuring consistent and timely period closings. The controller reports to the vice president of finance and administration, treasurer (VPFA).

The controller is also a senior member of the finance and administration division leadership team and plays a critical role in the division providing effective services to the College community meeting the needs of students, employees, and other constituents. The controller is responsible for leading staff members, maintaining high standards and conditions, and fostering a positive and inclusive environment, leading to a quality experience for customers. The controller establishes the workplace climate and norms of the operation by expecting high standards of customer service, content area knowledge and education, by having a demonstrated commitment to providing high-quality service for the Hampshire College community.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning and reviewing the work of others.
  • Selecting, training, instructing, appraising, counseling and motivating assigned staff. 
  • Maintaining records and preparing reports and correspondence including required regulatory reports and records.
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and web-based software).
  • Communicating; both verbal and written communication, as well as presenting information to groups.
  • Customer service to include responsiveness, providing a friendly approach, and problem-solving.
  • Organization and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Project management to include developing project plans with steps and timelines and ensuring project is seen to completion within set timeframe.
  • Time management to include ensuring deadlines are met or completed ahead of commitment.
  •  Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrates skill in understanding of cultural differences.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Experience with the following systems is welcome, but not required: Colleague and Fundriver/Balance. 
  • Working knowledge of merchant accounts, online banking systems, grant reporting systems, email and calendar management. 
  • Must have supervisory experience.
  • As an exempt employee, the incumbent may be asked to work variable schedules to include evenings and weekends.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
