Pay Range/ Status: $56,000 - $62,000 / Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Director of SPARC

The assistant director is a key member of the team that provides purpose-driven career services for students and alums. The SPARC office launched a new strategic direction in 2021 redesigning our services to more closely align with institutional goals and student needs. At SPARC, we recognize that life is a process, not a linear career path, and our services reflect a collaborative, holistic approach. The assistant director will develop a range of programs and events that support students to find their path and develop skills to navigate their journey, as well as provide individual and group coaching to help ensure our students build lives and careers in alignment with their values. This person works to enhance alumni and employer engagement to generate internship, externship, mentoring, job, graduate school, and/or career networking opportunties; including building alumni advisory councils to support our students and recent graduates pursuing a range of pathways. The assistant director will be responsible for hiring, training, and supervising up to 10 peer advisors to extend our services to students. This person provides expertise to oversee management of the Handshake platform for students, employers, and college staff; leverages social media for SPARC; collaborates to strategize and manage web content, navigation, and maintence; administers career development grants for students including engagement with donors; writes SPARC handouts and web resources; and performs a variety of administrative duties in support of the SPARC and the College.

  • Abilty to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with internal and external stakeholders, including students, alumni, parents, faculty, trustees, donors, employers, foundations, and colleagues
  • Familiarity with job market resources and trends, for example: job and internship search websites, networking opportunities and platforms, job application norms for different industries, social networking for career advancement, etc.
  • In-depth understanding of career and professional development as it applies to undergraduates and alums.
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitative skills
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members
  • Active, warm, and informed coaching and advising — listening, reflecting, guiding, supporting, intuiting, and giving concrete advice — with consideration and insight into the developmental and practical aspects of clients in young adulthood through retirement age
  • Excellent writing skills to write paper, web-based, and social media content, respond to inquiries, and provide feedback to students and alumni regarding their writing for cover letters, resumes, LinkedIn profiles, personal statements, etc
  • Demonstrated understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-opression concepts and issues, especially as they relate to working with alums and students
  • Experience providing coaching and developing collaboratons informed by an understanding of institutionalized and structural racism, as well as neurodiversity, socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, and other identity-related factors
  • Ability to hire, manage, train, and supervise a representative student staff, using a strengths-based, motivational, and collaborative approach
  • Familiar with career services platforms such as Handshake ; able to manage these programs effectively
  • Skilled in using a variety of social media platforms
  • Experience with project management and creating efficient systems
  • Ability to manage large amounts of information with accuracy and precision


  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
