Pay Range/ Status: $60,000 - $68,000 / Exempt

                                  $5,000 - $5,666.66 paid monthly

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Director of Facilities and Grounds

Anticipated Start Date: Immediately

ABOUT US:

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the director of facilities, and in accordance with established procedures and standards, the facilities manager works with facilities and campus stake holders to manage daily operations of the work order system and projects of all sizes, including plan development, cost estimates, bid process, implementation, completion, QA/QC, and cost controls.  This position requires collaboration across multiple departments and divisions to schedule and manage the overall work flow of facilities. This position must ensure the effective and efficient utilization of the Colleges’ resources.

As an administrator of the facilities department, the facilities manager is considered essential personnel and is on-call for the snow removal program, emergencies, and other incidents as necessary to lead or assist with assessment and coordination of operations and activities.  The facilities manager must obtain and keep current certifications as required for the performance of their job duties and supported by the College. This position is a secondary designee to the director of facilities and will perform designated duties in the absence of the director of facilities.  The facilities manager will be key in building a positive, engaged, and productive department.

This position is also essential to student and community service and experience. As a member of the facilities team, the incumbent must feel comfortable working in an evolving, face-paced organizational framework with shifting responsibilities. This position collaborates with other facilities staff, and a variety of offices to meet the department goals, and further the mission of the facilities department. The incumbent will participate as a committed member of the Facilities team in college and department work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development: assists in the coordination and facilitation of work and services for students and other community members. Availability to work occasional night and weekends required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Extensive professional experience with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, or similar programs.
  • Experience with Facilities or Construction workflow software and programs, preferably work order programs such as SchoolDude.
  • Current or past certifications or credentials relevant to facilities or construction management are preferred.
  • Experience with construction, project, and move management preferred.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Possess a valid Drivers License and be able to be a credentialed driver, insurable under the College's insurance provider.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.

 

  • Knowledge of:
    • Facilities best practices and experiences in all phases of maintenance operations and repair; including custodial grounds and licensed trades.
    • Manage, plan and administer a plant operation and program; direct the work of others; maintain operating costs and other records; prepare necessary operation and progress reports; oversee planning for repairs, alterations and construction, equipment, grounds and landscaping; communicate effectively orally and in writing and establish cooperative working relationships with persons contacted in the course of performing assigned duties.
    • Sustainability practices related to construction, grounds and maintenance.
    • Applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards governing building construction, maintenance and grounds.
    • Workplace safety practices and requirements for buildings and grounds.

 

  • Skills in:
    • Planning, organizing, scheduling, assigning and reviewing the work of others.
    • Effective oral communications that create an environment of respect and trust.
    • Evaluating and developing procedures, standards and methods for facilities and grounds maintenance and improvement.
    • Developing and maintaining effective and respectful working relationships across an organization.

    • Demonstrates skill in understanding of cultural differences

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in facilities maintenance, skilled trades and supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and supervisory experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
