Pay Range/ Status: $82,000 - $90,000 / Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Associate Director of Information Technology

Anticipated Start Date:  June 2023

We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 600 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College. The information technology department collaborates with the rest of the community to further the College’s mission, as well as providing a wide range of academic and administrative technology support and services to the Hampshire community. As part of the information technology (IT) team, you will be instrumental in the department achieving its mission and goals!

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The senior system administrator provides primary support, maintenance, configuration, planning, upgrading, and implementation of the college's server and storage infrastructure. This position is responsible for providing the technical implementation and enforcement of written policy regarding server and storage infrastructure.

This position is essential to the student and community service & experience. As a member of the IT team, the incumbent must feel comfortable working in an evolving, face-paced organizational framework with shifting responsibilities. This position collaborates with other IT staff, and a variety of offices to meet the departmental goals, and further the mission of the department and of the College. This position participates as a committed member and leader of the IT team in college and division work, projects, meetings, events and overall community development. As part of the IT department, this position may work to support other department projects, tasks, and events as necessary and as assigned. This position is on call unless otherwise arranged, and may be required to work odd hours in order to complete necessary duties. Option for hybrid work if located in the state of MA.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to learn and implement new solutions quickly.
  • Good troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Linux and related services, programs and protocols, e.g. Apache, Samba, RAID, DHCP, SMTP, DNS etc.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Inventiveness, creativity, and ability to create in-house solutions to meet our custom needs.
  • Expert knowledge of VMWare or equivalent virtualization technologies.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Working knowledge of Windows server OSes and their upkeep.
  • Familiarity with current storage technologies and strategies
  • Basic working knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and operating systems (IOS, JunOS or equivalent).

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of five years’ job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
