Schedule: 35 Hours a week

Pay Range/ Status: $70,000 - $75,000 / Exempt

Reports to: Senior Director, C.A.P.E.S.

The campus safety department supports the Hampshire community in achieving its mission of being a challenging, but compassionate place to learn and grow by ensuring the safety of its people and property.  This goal also entails creating and maintaining an environment on campus that is inclusive, mindful of different backgrounds, and above all, patient. As part of the campus safety team, you will be instrumental in the department achieving its mission and goals.


The associate senior director of campus safety and wellbeing is a full-time professional staff member in the division of student affairs, reporting to the senior director of community advocacy, prevention and education and safety (CAPES).

The associate senior director assist the senior director in overseeing the operational management of the office of campus safety and wellbeing utilizing the Community Response Model. In this capacity, the associate senior director oversee the supervision and the daily operation of the campus safety assistants and health and wellness advocates by overseeing training, shift schedules, programming and perform evaluation. Additionally, the associate senior director patrols the College properties during the academic semester and during college breaks or curtailed operations. On a daily basis, provide routine assistance to the students, employees and visitors; maintain access controls and conduct property checks.

Other key responsibilities include but not limited to overseeing the Emergency Response Protocols and Training Program for the campus, responsible for maintaining a safe and secure learning and work environment for all members of the Hampshire College community, as well as guest and visitors, assist the senior director with the development, implementation, and management of campus safety services, resources and programs ( wellness, prevention and education), including but not limited to personal safety, dispatch and security operations, inclement weather, fire safety, disruptions in daily operations, emergency and crisis management, transportation, and parking enforcement for the College.

Additionally, the associate senior director assists with the following campus committee work that include but not limited to the following; emergency response protocol, operations, crisis response team, and concern, assessment, response, evaluation (CARE) team. The associate senior director will serve in these campus committees with the utmost care and a keen focus on being student-centered in its delivery of services and resources.

The associate senior director will assist the senior director in developing campus safety and wellbeing to be an integrated operation that is equitable, just, and inclusive.  Guidance will be provided to staff members to work together to serve and dismantle barriers and division among students and the College, particularly in the following areas: crisis response, campus safety and security, sexual misconduct/assault prevention and survivor support. Campus safety and wellbeing is a robust network within the division of student affairs that focus on community safety and security, prevention, education, and crisis response and to help resolve conflicts by utilizing community response model and restorative practices. The associate senior director will assist the team by paying close attention to the varying needs of students from different cultural backgrounds and identities that may require focused support and considerations. The matter of diversity, equity and inclusion is evolving and fluid and the needs of underrepresented students are ever changing, hence, the associate senior director needs to be open-minded, enjoys learning new knowledge, ready to adapt and evolve the office accordingly to successfully support students.

The associate senior director is a key member of the division of student affairs, who will lead staff members towards creating an environment where students are able to work diligently to support its community and pursue excellence; eager to learn, be open to new information and are prepared to be out of their comfort zone to enable learning and growth.

The associate senior director is a student development practitioner who is student centered, open to new and challenging experiences, highly motivated, and cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful and educational experiences with students. The associate senior director must have experience in program design and management and feel comfortable working in an evolving, fast-paced, organizational framework with shifting responsibilities. Flexibility is required to be in line with the College’s academic calendar, divisional priorities, and student needs.

The associate senior director will work collaboratively with student affairs departments, and other campus constituents to build a community that will be open and honest with one another and act with integrity and civility at all times, treating one another with respect, care and kindness as we work through conflicts and seek justice and understanding within and beyond the campus community. The associate senior director will model the way to cultivate and support students’ campus involvement and develop co-curricular programs that creates an environment that have its community members take personal responsibilities to build a community that is socially and civically engaged; and a community who values and contributes to each other's safety, health and wellness. Centered in both Restorative and Transformative Justice, this will aid in creating a campus culture that is more actively anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable.

The staff member contributes to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance the ENGAGE Day of Learning, New and Transfer Student Orientation, Community Orientation, and Community Education Day that advances the College’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a vibrant, welcoming and safe community. Participates as a committed member of the student affairs team in college and divisional committee work, projects, meetings, retreats and overall community development. Assists in the coordination and facilitation of academic courses, co-curricular activities and services for students. Availability to work evenings and weekends is required. Be able to use vacation time outside of regular campus calendar.


  • Directly related educational background and relevant work experience
  • Demonstrated success in higher education, program management and leadership, particularly regarding business practices pertaining to campus safety, health and wellbeing advocacies, restorative practices, prevention and education.

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS, JD, PhD) in Student Affairs; Higher Education Administration, Organizational Leadership, Urban Leadership and Policy Studies
  • Minimum three years’ of job-related experience.
  • Certification in CPD/first responder or ability to obtain certification in Massachusetts within six months of hire; EMT certification desirable.
  • A valid Massachusetts driver’s license and successfully meet the requirements of Hampshire College driver credentialing policy.

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
