We provide residential undergraduate education to approximately 900 students. The mission of residence life at Hampshire College is to create a dynamic and inclusive campus community in which personal development is encouraged and all students feel welcomed and supported. Residence life aspires to provide a safe and bias-free environment for all students to learn and connect within their community, while emphasizing personal responsibility. Working across the community care and wellbeing team, the residence life coordinator fosters learning by providing leadership training, administrative guidance, and opportunities for involvement.
Residence life is housed in the Division of Justice, Equity, and Antiracism and the residence life coordinator will be instrumental in helping the College move closer to achieving its ambitious antiracism and equity objectives through active community building. Successful candidates will also possess strong communication skills, cultural competence, and previous experience in residence life or related student-centered roles.
An on-campus apartment is provided for this live-in position and is expected to serve as a primary residence. The residence life coordinator must serve on an on-call schedule rotation within Hampshire’s community responder model. Some evenings and weekends are require.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The residence life coordinator is a full-time, 12-month, live-on professional staff member in the office of residence life. The residence life coordinator reports directly to the associate dean of justice, equity, and antiracism - community care and wellbeing and shares in the responsibility for all facets of the residence life program for students living in traditional corridor and/or apartment style housing. Administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to managing budget, following up on work orders and student concerns, follow-up with students via the community standards process, performing regular residence hall walkthroughs, and prioritizing competing student needs.
Core community responsibilities include community development initiatives with resident assistants and student leaders, programming in the residence halls and supporting campus wide-initiatives, collaborating with students living in identity based housing, and student staff support and development. This position supports housing operations functions, including opening and closing of residence halls, key audits, access control audits, learning the campus housing technology (the Housing Cloud), and following up with facilities and housekeeping concerns. The residence life coordinator will have the opportunity to lead and manage key operational aspects of residence life such as student staff recruitment, student staff annual and in-house training, housing and facilities management, identity-based housing, and other projects as needed to support student persistence efforts.
The residence life coordinator is a student development practitioner and equity and inclusion advocate who cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful experiences with students, is open to new and challenging experiences directed towards professional growth, and is committed to creating and contributing to an aspiring antiracist, inclusive, and equitable campus community. This position provides oversight for a residential education area ranging from 275-675 students and management of 1-3 residence halls, including identity-based housing. Duties include resident assistant staff supervision, community development and student learning initiatives, frequent and meaningful interactions with residential students, building and facilities management, crisis response, administrative and project management tasks and other general responsibilities within the scope of the position.
The community care and wellness team provides 24-hour/day support and resources to student residents via an on-call system under Hampshire’s Community Responder Model, which focuses on promoting our values of community care, student self-advocacy and agency, accountability, trauma-informed practice, intersectionality, and safety. This position provides non-clinical support to students in a wide variety of emergency, urgent, and non-emergency situations, assessing for wellbeing and safety in each case. This person is a strong collaborator, serving as a crisis responder as the first-line of emergency on-call personnel in collaboration with the larger on-call team including campus safety & wellbeing team members, the counselor on call, and the administrator on call. The person in this position develops and supervises approximately 5-9 residence life student staff and collaborates with campus partners to intervene with and support students of concern including students who violate our community standards within the residence halls, students at-risk of leaving the College due to interpersonal challenges, difficulty navigating possible barriers to success, trouble meeting academic requirements and/or progress toward academic goals, and beyond.
This position will be a member of and collaborate with the residence life team with strong connections with our campus community responders in community care and wellbeing - trained first responders who are committed to an anti-policing environment. Partnering with justice, equity, and antiracism (JEA) team members, the residence life coordinator will encourage community development within the student residences throughout the academic year (some late nights, evenings, and weekends are required). The residence life coordinator will oversee targeted outreach to promote activities to students of the community that they oversee.
The residence life coordinator will contribute to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance identity-based housing events and support, Community Days of Learning, new and returning student move-in, new student orientation, welcome week, How To Hamp series, commencement, cultural graduation ceremonies, the Five College Queer Conference, HampHalloween, casino night, identity center events and cultural celebrations, and other programs that advance the College’s commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion (JEA). The residence life coordinator participates as a committed member of the JEA team by participating in college and division committee work, projects, meetings, retreats, and overall community development
REQUIRED SKILLS:
● Understanding of Student Development Theory ●Strong supervisory skills ● Strong communication skills ● Strong problem-solving skills ● Strong collaborative skills ● Ability to pay close attention to detail for budget tracking, building walkthroughs and safety checks, and case management ● Familiarity with computer programs: Microsoft Office Suite, Google suite, information management (Colleague), Housing Cloud, social media applications, are a plus. ● Ability to modify communication style to multiple cultural environments and needs. ● Ability to ask for help and support and receive input from multiple constituents to best support concerns and to enhance community care ● Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities. ● Ability to work effectively with a diverse, intersectional student population providing support for individuals from minoritized backgrounds including BIPOC, LGBTQAI2S+, international, food insecure, adult learners, and neurodiverse student populations. ● Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes justice, equity, and antiracism and is an aspiring antiracist community
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year college degree or equivalent
- One year of job-related experience
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
