Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a Visiting Assistant/Associate professor of Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS). We seek a community-engaged scholar, artist, or expert from any specialization within the humanities, arts, or humanistic social sciences who will make a critical contribution to our dismantling white supremacy initiative. While the position is open, we are particularly interested in applicants whose work and teaching falls into one or more of the following areas: intersections between critical Indigenous Studies and Black studies, global indigeneities, art theory and practice for social change. The visiting appointment will be for three semesters, ideally beginning in spring 2021. The appointment may be fulfilled remotely during the spring 2021 semester. If Hampshire is unable to hire a suitable candidate for spring 2021, the position will become a one-year visiting appointment for the 2021–2022 academic year. This position is part of the Five College NAIS initiative “Gathering at the Crossroads” and is supported by a major grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Successful candidates will be welcomed into the NAIS community in the Five Colleges.

Hampshire’s academic program is organized around a set of transdisciplinary Learning Collaboratives, which assemble faculty, students, and staff to address pressing contemporary issues and challenges. This visiting position will be located within the “In/Justice” Learning Collaborative, which has adopted “dismantling white supremacy” as its shared curricular challenge through at least 2022. The successful candidate will teach seminars and mentor student projects that explore this challenge, and will contribute to the program in NAIS at Hampshire and in the Five Colleges. Candidates are invited to explain how their teaching and scholarly/artistic work in NAIS engages the shared challenge of dismantling white supremacy.

The successful candidate will:

  • have an appropriate terminal degree (PhD, MFA, etc.) or will expect to complete that degree by Fall 2021;
  • teach only one course (possibly remotely) during spring 2021, to facilitate public engagement at Hampshire and in the Five Colleges;
  • offer the standard load of two courses (or equivalent learning opportunity) each semester during the 2021–22 academic year;
  • serve on Hampshire College senior thesis (“Division III”) committees during 2021–2022;
  • advise and mentor Hampshire and Five College students interested in Native American and Indigenous Studies;
  • participate in events and forums organized by the In/Justice Learning Collaborative;
  • collaborate as appropriate with the Five College Native American and Indigenous Studies program;
  • continue to advance their own scholarly/artistic agenda and present that work in professional contexts, supported by professional development funds.
