Reports to: Assistant Dean of Collaborative Learning and Practice

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 600 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College. The community commons (CoCo) provides vision, leadership and support in the areas of community engagement, collaborative learning and practice, peer mentorship, among other co-curricular dimensions of the academic program.  The community commons (CoCo) works closely with the office of institutional diversity and inclusion (IDI) to advance our commitment to building an actively anti-racists institution.  As part of CoCo and IDI, this position will be instrumental to achieving these missions and goals!

 

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the assistant dean of collaborative learning and practice, the academic director for restorative practices (RP) will contribute to the vision and implementation of a comprehensive plan to integrate restorative practices and justice across the academic program. The academic director for restorative practices provides leadership, management, and oversight of campus-wide restorative practices, in particular by collaborating with the director of RP in student affairs. The academic director is responsible for fostering restorative practices across the curriculum and ensuring strategic interaction among faculty, students, campus-based centers and programs, and community partners to foster community engagement and accountability and to integrate restorative practices into courses and other curricular components of the program. They are responsible for steering Hampshire’s pilot program in restorative practices and overseeing the program’s assessment and growth into the future.

The academic director will work collaboratively with both academic affairs and student affairs departments which includes the community commons (CoCo) and community advocacy, prevention and education and safety (CAPES) to build a community that will be open and honest with one another and act with integrity and civility at all times, treating one another with respect, care and kindness as we work through conflicts and seek justice and understanding within and beyond the campus community. Centered in both restorative and transformative justice, this will aid in creating a campus culture that is more actively anti-racist, inclusive and equitable.

The academic director for restorative practices is a practitioner who cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful experiences with students, faculty and staff. This position needs to be highly visible, maintain strong connections and work successfully with students, faculty, staff, to strengthen knowledge of and commitment to restorative justice. This is a new position and candidates must have extensive experience in restorative practices, program design and management and feel comfortable working in an evolving organizational framework with shifting responsibilities.

The academic director for RP contributes to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance the ENGAGE Day of Learning, New and Transfer Student Orientation, Community Orientation, and Community Education Day that advance the College’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.  Participates as a committed member of the academic affairs while collaborating closely with their counterpart in student affairs.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience with program leadership, development and implementation, management and oversight.Leadingcandidates will have experience working at the intersection of academia and community-led movements, and bring significant experience in and understanding of restorative practices and justice, particularly in academic settings.
  • Demonstrated a high level of mental agility and common sense to read situations, adjust conversations, expectations and attitudes as needed. Effective negotiation skills including the following practices but not limited to active listening, remaining calm, expressing empathy, treating individual with respect and remaining non-judgmental.
  • Directly related educational background and relevant work experience
  • Excellent communication skills including writing, training, facilitation, and/or public speaking experience. Ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities;
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds; Demonstrates skill in understanding of cultural differences.
  • Employs anti-racist practices and principles to accomplish work; Ability to serve as an advocate for individuals of all ethnicities, genders, ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • Supports and enhances a sense of belonging and success of students from traditionally marginalized populations.
  • Ability to handle high volumes of work and multiple projects running concurrently; excellent at problem solving; and the ability to relay information and respond to correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Comfortable seeking out, assessing and implementing new technologies.
  • Advanced word processing and data entry skills using Microsoft programs (especially Word and Excel) and Google documents; experience and comfort using spreadsheets and databases; experience and comfort using social media to organize and engage project participants; and the ability to assess and implement new software.Familiarity with project management software, online calendaring, and design software such as InDesign a plus.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
