Position Type: Full Time

Schedule: 35 Hours a week

Pay Range/ Status: $46,000 - $51,000 / Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Dean of Humanities and Arts

Anticipated Start Date: August 24, 2022

The Theatre Program celebrates the voices of students who are POC, queer, from diverse genders, economic backgrounds, and abilities - and all young theatre makers whose work challenges cultural norms, engages with social change, crosses boundaries of form, and reaches for excellence in craft. The theatre program manager will join faculty and staff in support of students in the creation of new and experimental forms through the use of flexible spaces and innovative forms of stagecraft and technology.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The theatre program manager (TPM} is responsible for supervising and mentoring the student use of the theatre spaces and, with faculty, for managing and directing the production portion of the theatre program. The TPM advises, instructs and mentors students in the fields of theatre management, construction, and engineering theories and practices. The TPM supervises and manages the budgets, maintains the equipment, and implements the policies of the program. The TPM monitors the safe use of theatre facilities and equipment. The TPM hires and supervises the theatre work study students. The TPM is the supervisor for the costume shop supervisor.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • In depth knowledge of theatrical production and management procedures.
  • In depth knowledge of theatrical and standard building practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain power tools, lighting, sound, projection and other production related equipment.
  • Knowledge of theatrical design principles.
  • Understanding of the institutional bookkeeping procedures, and the ability to organize and communicate complex production details.
  • Ability to instruct students in theatrical management, building, lighting and sound techniques within unique learning and project-based environments.
  • Must be able to effectively mentor students carrying out comprehensive projects. This requires the TPM to continue involvement, research and practice in all aspects of the field.
  • The ability to communicate, and teach building and production practices, tool safety, and job site safety.
  • The ability to safely run a crew of workers with varied skill levels.
  • Well versed in workplace and theatrical equipment safety.

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
  • A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
