Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 600 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College. Prevention and education is part of the community advocacy, prevention & education, and safety (C.A.P.E.S) department within the division of student affairs with a focus to contribute to creating an environment where students, faculty, and staff are able to work diligently to support the Hampshire College community and pursue excellence, while consistently challenging themselves and others to dismantle systems of oppression and racism. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The director of prevention and education is a full time, 12-month, live-on professional staff member in the division of student affairs. The director reports to the senior director of student affairs for community advocacy, prevention & education, and safety (C.A.P.E.S.). They provide leadership and vision for the College’s alcohol and other drug prevention and education programs, survivor support services, and violence education and prevention initiatives. The director develops, implements, and coordinates across the division of student affairs programs services, and strategies aimed at addressing, preventing, educating, and decreasing sexual misconduct and relationship and power-based personal violence for the College community. In this capacity, the director provides support and resource coordination for victims of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking. Responsibilities around survivor support and violence prevention are administered in coordination with the Hampshire College Title IX Coordinator. The director also partners with the dean of student office – wellness center, campus colleagues and community resources to coordinate a comprehensive and evidence-based alcohol and other drug programs and services focused around education, prevention, student support, and harm reduction.
The director will develop and implement a comprehensive sexual misconduct prevention education plan. The approach utilized should be intersectional and seek to disrupt all systems of oppression (for example, racism, ableism, homophobia) and include survivors of all gender identities. Provide current information and statistics to be utilized in social media, social norming, and other educational marketing materials. In addition, audits existing trainings, programs, and materials and makes recommendations for continued improvements. Given the nature of the position, the director serves as the initial contact person for campus survivors of sexual assault, relationship abuse, and stalking and as a result is responsible for personal advocacy, follow-up contact, and providing appropriate on campus and community referrals for students and/or their families. Also, develops working knowledge of the 5-College Consortium and Hampshire County's sexual misconduct and equal opportunity policies to facilitate referrals for survivors and other campus community members.
This position serves to create/maintain an environment that enriches the student experience, increases access to student and community support resources, contributes to co-curricular learning, and promotes self-advocacy while emphasizing both community and individual well-being and sense of belonging. The director of prevention and education is a student development practitioner who is student centered, highly motivated, and cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful and educational experiences with students. This position needs to be highly visible, maintain strong connections and work successfully with students, faculty, staff, parents, and external constituents focused on prevention and education.
This position participates in campus-wide events, responds to requests for training, and develops collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and students: coordinates and utilizes assessment and campus climate data to recommend and improve educational programming tailored to the Hampshire College community; supports efforts of colleagues in the office to provide trainings on Title IX compliance. Promotes awareness of the office's function and fosters positive perceptions through professional interactions.
The director will work collaboratively with student affairs departments and leadership, and other campus constituents to build a community that will be open and honest with one another and act with integrity and civility at all times, treating one another with respect, care, and kindness as we work through conflicts and seek justice and understanding within and beyond the campus community. Centered in both restorative and transformative justice, this will aid in creating a campus culture that is more actively anti-racist, inclusive, and equitable. The staff member contributes to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance the ENGAGE Day of Learning, New and Transfer Student Orientation, Community Orientation, and Community Education Day that advances the College’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and a vibrant, welcoming and safe community. Participates as a committed member of the student affairs team in emergency response and "on call" rotation, divisional committee work, projects, meetings, retreats and overall community development and assists in the coordination and facilitation of academic courses, co-curricular activities and services for students. - Knowledge of issues and dynamics related to sexual assault, relationship violence, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and stalking on college campuses
- Knowledge of issues and dynamics related to alcohol and other drug education and substance abuse on college campuses.
- Experience creating and providing educational programs around consent, bystander intervention, survivors supports, and social justice.
- Understanding of Student Development Theory, knowledge of higher education trends and best practices, administration and governance.
- Background in trauma-informed practices focusing on confidentiality, empowerment, and self-determination.
- Knowledge of Title IX and Clery guidance and regulations.
- Familiarity with computer programs: Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, information management (Colleague), social media applications, student activities platforms, etc.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year college degree or equivalent
- Minimum of three years’job-related experience
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
