We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 700 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College The center for academic support and advising (CASA) provides support and assistance to students and advisors to plan and achieve academic goals. CASA monitors students' academic progress and offers a variety of support and programming to faculty and students. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the dean of academic support and advising, the assistant dean of advising supports student success as an active and collaborative member of the center for academic support and advising (CASA) and as a collaborator with the office of accessibility resource services (OARS). The position conducts advising and academic oversight primarily with first- and second-year (Division I and II) students and with students at all levels as needed as part of the departmental team. The incumbent works closely with faculty advisors, student affairs and central records in tracking and assessing students’ academic progress and overall wellbeing.

This position also holds particular responsibility for supporting students with documented accommodations. In this role, the incumbent works closely with the office of accessibility resource services (OARS) to coordinate accessible instructional materials (AIM) and assistive technology needed for student accommodations. This includes coordinating with specific students and faculty as well as broad training of faculty in the design and creation of accessible materials and courses to benefit all students. The incumbent must have an understanding of justice, equity, and antiracism and anti-oppression concepts and issues, especially as they apply to accessibility services and disability justice.

As a member of the CASA team and frequent collaborator with the OARs team, this position is essential to student academic and community experience. The incumbent must feel comfortable working in an often fast-paced organizational framework with shifting and evolving responsibilities. This position participates as a committed member and leader within both teams in college and division committee work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development. Availability to work occasional nights and weekends may be required.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Experience advising students.
  • Demonstrated understanding in ADA, Section 504 compliance as it applies to providing accommodations to students with a range of disabilities including those related to information processing, organization and executive functioning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Experience facilitating workshops and providing programs and services to create greater access to information processing, executive functioning.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for students for all racial, ethnic, genders and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Ability to foster dialogues between faculty and students and amongst various constituencies.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously through good organizational skills.
  • Experience in a variety of assistive technology software for students.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of various forms of adaptive technology equipment and applications, functions, methods, costs and usage.
  • Working knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and holistic teaching pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of accessibility as it pertains to learning, electronic IT and physical spaces.
  • Fluent in using Microsoft Office, Excel, video production software (ex. camtasia) and assistive or learning technology (e.g., Dragon, Glean, Grackle, Kurzweil 3000, and Robobraille).
  • Program assessment and data collection experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and plan programs.
  • Understanding of a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities within a community of college students and staff.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-oppression concepts and issues, especially as they apply to accessibility services and disability justice.

Preferred

  • A working understanding of the nature of specific learning disabilities and experience in the area of developmental writing, information processing, organizational and executive functioning skills.
  • Experience working in higher education.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
