Reports to: Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager

Natural science supports student learning and research in areas such as agricultural studies, biological and life sciences, chemistry, environmental studies and sustainability, health and pre-medical studies, marine science, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The laboratory technician provides general academic and laboratory support for courses and research conducted in Cole Science Center, and is responsible for the upkeep of laboratory areas. This includes routine tasks such as making solutions, glassware washing, autoclaving, re-stocking supplies, watering plants in the greenhouse, and maintaining general tidiness of the laboratories and storage areas. The laboratory technician also assists students with laboratory techniques, protocols, and analytical instrumentation usage.  They provide afternoon and evening oversight of student work conducted in Cole Science Center, and ensure a safe working environment for students in the building after regular business hours end (i.e. after 4:30 pm). The laboratory technician’s primary work hours are 1:00 – 9:00 pm Monday through Friday during the academic year and 10:00 am – 6:00 pm during the summer, when classes are not in session, and during the initial training period. The schedule may change due to the operational needs of the department and the division.

The laboratory technician follows and implements Hampshire College’s laboratory safety guidelines, and performs various safety-related duties (such as the handling of hazardous waste). They ensure, along with the laboratory and instrumentation manager, compliance with local, state and federal health, safety and environmental requirements. The laboratory technician will serve on the Cole Science Safety Committee and serve as the secondary laser safety officer (as necessitated by the MA Department of Radiation Control).

The laboratory technician will cross train with the Laboratory and Instrumentation Manager to learn basic operation and upkeep of analytical instrumentation, general laboratory upkeep, supplies ordering, and other routine tasks. They will also assist the laboratory and instrumentation manager with the chemical inventory maintenance, as well as with the organization and tidiness of stockroom, other supplies storage locations, and any other organization or cleaning tasks that happen in Cole Science Center.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • No job-related experience required

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum two years of relevant job experience.
  • Some experience in the operation and maintenance of the onsite analytical equipment (some examples include ICP-MS, laser ablation, ICP-AES, NMR, GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, IC, FIA, UV-VIS, microscopes, spectrometers, incubators, fume and tissue culture hoods, water purification units, microplate readers, fluorescent microscopes, pH meters, autoclave)
