Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an assistant vegetable grower for its Farm, Food and Sustainability Program. This is a one-year position.

The assistant vegetable grower will assist the community supported agriculture (CSA) manager in all aspects of production and harvest of organic vegetables on the Hampshire College Farm. They will assist in the marketing of these crops to CSA members, the campus dining hall and the wider campus community. Duties will include, but not be limited to, crop production through transplant production and vegetable seeding, field tillage, cultivation and weed control, and compost and fertilizer application. The grower will be expected to supervise and mentor CSA employees; provide specialized equipment training and Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to maximize worker and food safety; promote CSA programs; and support a positive working environment at the Farm Center. The vegetable production assistant will also work with the CSA manager, the director of food, farm, and sustainability, and faculty to facilitate the summer program in food, farm and sustainability and to conduct on-farm research projects as needed.

A bachelor’s degree is required with a minimum of 3 years of vegetable production or other farm related experience.  Qualified candidates should have excellent organizational and communication skills; the ability to operate and maintain farm equipment; be able to organize and supervise student work-study crews and summer interns; possess an understanding of the issues related to sustainable agriculture; and a knowledge of and commitment to Hampshire's unique educational experience. Candidate must be able to lift over 50 lbs. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential. This position requires occasional evenings and weekends and requires a valid driver’s license and successful completion of the College’s defensive driving training course.
