Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for director of outdoor programs, recreation and athletics (OPRA) in the student life division.

The director of outdoor programs, recreation and athletics (OPRA) is a leadership position in the division of student life and a key organizer of efforts to promote a healthy campus culture that facilitates student engagement and success.  The director supervises and leads the OPRA unit, which includes a comprehensive slate of outdoor courses and trips, including rock and ice climbing, backpacking, whitewater and sea kayaking, skiing, and cycling; exercise and physical education; specialized instruction in martial arts and yoga; a small intercollegiate athletics program, including cross country, soccer, and basketball; and several competitive club sports.  OPRA is committed to the principles of inclusion and accessibility.  As a leader in the student life division, the director participates in division-wide decision-making, goal setting, and staff development.  The director of OPRA reports to the dean of students.

An advanced degree in outdoor education, experiential education, physical education, sports management, or related fields is required, with a minimum of seven years job-related experience. Qualified candidates must have demonstrated success in higher education program management and leadership, as well as knowledge of risk management policies and procedures. Applicants should have the ability to function independently and to complete projects with limited supervision; manage ambiguity and collaborative decision making structures; have strong problem-solving skills; excellent supervisory skills; and ability to work effectively with a diverse student population. Candidates must be computer-literate; be able to work with social media applications and information management; and have experience with presenting to and training groups. This position requires excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Previous supervisory experience is essential. Current instructor's certification in one or more of the following preferred: wilderness first responder, RAD, Advanced CPR, First Aid, defensive driving, and state certified pool operator. Licensure to drive 12 and 15 passenger vans, or the ability to procure such a license within the first three months of employment is required. Candidate must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
