Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium with Amherst, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, invites applications for the position of director of human resources. The College is located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts and contributes to the rich cultural environments of the college towns of Amherst, South Hadley and Northampton.

Reporting to the College’s vice president of finance and administration, the director of human resources will also have frequent access to the President and his leadership team or senior team and will provide leadership and overall strategic direction in all areas related to the effective utilization of human resources and to increasing the overall effectiveness of the College. The director will consult with senior management to develop and align comprehensive human resources strategies with the mission and values of Hampshire College and will consult with members of the community in all areas of human resources management including effective workforce staffing, employee relations, benefits administration, fiscal accountability, and quality improvement. The director will work with the administration (including school deans), faculty, and staff to seek advice and to build support for changes in and enhancements to existing human resource programs and practices. The director will provide leadership in facilitating communication, decision-making, trust, employee professional development, and employee relations, all toward enhancing the overall effectiveness of the College. The director will provide leadership as the College increasingly seeks to promote inclusion, equity and diversity within our community by adding to the thought leadership on this topic as well as coordinating trainings, workshops and speakers. The director will ensure that Hampshire College complies with all state and federal laws in areas such as employment, labor relations, and benefits. The director acts as co-director of the Campus’ title IX coordinator. The director will serve on Five College committees to foster cooperative initiatives in human resources management and organizational development.

A bachelor’s degree is required; master’s degree in Human Resource Management or related field preferred. SPHR or SHRM-SCP also preferred. Successful candidate must have a minimum of seven years progressively responsible experience in Human Resources as well as previous supervisory experience. Hampshire College seeks a committed and experienced professional with demonstrated leadership skills and competence in human resources functions.  The successful candidate must possess a commitment to fairness and equity and have a demonstrated collaborative approach to establishing credibility in relationships with all constituents – staff, faculty, and administration.  Candidates should have strong organizational, interpersonal, technical, analytical, written and oral communication skills. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.
