Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an assistant professor of US foreign policy and empire studies. Hampshire College is committed to building a culturally diverse intellectual community and strongly encourages applications from women and minority candidates.

We seek a scholar whose work engages a historical and critical approach to US foreign policy that centers on the post World War II period. We are particularly interested in a candidate whose research demonstrates knowledge of non-traditional approaches to US foreign policy, such as the dynamics of empire and decolonization; the cultures of US foreign policy; gender and security; political violence and revolution and/or sources of conflict in the global south. The geographic focus is open, but candidates focusing on Latin America and/or the Caribbean are particularly welcome.

The successful candidate will be located in Hampshire's interdisciplinary School of Critical Social Inquiry and will complement the School’s strength in area studies. We especially encourage candidates whose scholarship can link area studies to US history, politics, and culture or whose scholarship explores the impact of US foreign policy on the Global South. Candidates are requested to articulate how their teaching, scholarship and/or community service would support Hampshire’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

This position requires a PhD and a commitment to innovative and interdisciplinary pedagogy. The teaching load is two courses per semester. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to advise students undertaking independent research projects in the broad area of empire studies/US foreign policy.

Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2016.  Hampshire College offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits program.  Applicants should submit a cover letter, a separate statement of teaching interests and philosophy, a curriculum vita, two sample syllabi and one sample of written scholarship, not exceeding 10,000 words, plus the names of three referees via our website at https://jobs.hampshire.edu.
