Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium invites applications for the position of college archivist.

The college archivist works collaboratively to ensure preservation of and access to archival and special collections that document and support Hampshire College's mission. The mission of Hampshire College is to foster a lifelong passion for learning, inquiry, and ethical citizenship that inspires students to contribute to knowledge, justice, and positive change in the world and, by doing so, to transform higher education. 

Reporting to the director of the library, the college archivist expands access to the College's unique archival and art collections through thoughtful prioritization, needs assessment, and application of emerging technologies as well as providing leadership on digital projects. In providing responsible stewardship for the collection, the college archivist processes materials and collaborates with consortial peers to add resources to Compass, our shared digital repository, while also fostering positive donor relationships.  This position works with gallery staff as needed to highlight collections.  Such collection holdings include the official records of the College, oral histories, the Division III senior thesis archive; Special Collections, including artists books and photographic print collections by photographers Robert Doisneau, Paul Strand, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Jerome Liebling, among others; the Barbara Mettler Dance Archive; the Robert Lisle history of photography collection; the Robert Seydel Collection; the Kate Pulitzer Freedberg Archives; and other art and teaching collections.

An advanced degree with a minimum of three years of job related experience is required. The college archivist should be skilled in all aspects of archival collections care. Qualified candidate must have an understanding of nationally accepted standards, tools, and best practices for archival processing and description, including Describing Archives: a Content Standard (DACS);  expertise with applicable standards including: DACS, EAD, MODS, Dublin Core, MARC and other appropriate description and encoding standards.  The college archivist must have knowledge and experience with collection management systems such as Archivespace, and a deep knowledge of digital preservation practices and experience managing digital & print photographic and audiovisual materials. The college archivist must be knowledgeable about digital library infrastructures, copyright as it applies to libraries and archives, and to digitization of archival material. Other technology skills include content management tools such as  Drupal and WordPress, standard office programs like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and software and hardware for digitization. Should have familiarity with standard library ILS systems. Excellent written and verbal skills with ability to present to diverse audiences are essential. The college archivist supports and enhances a sense of belonging and success of students from traditionally marginalized populations, and should be passionate about working in an organization which values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism
