Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Senior Vice President for Justice, Equity, and Antiracism

We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 600 students. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The director of the office of accessibility resources and services (OARS) is a full-time, 12-month professional staff member. This position reports directly to the senior vice president for the division of justice, equity, and antiracism, which has the following mission: “Leading the collective work to transform Hampshire College into an actively liberatory and anti-oppressive community, the Division of Justice, Equity, and Antiracism equips students, staff, and faculty to question, challenge, and change existing cultures, structures, practices, and systems so as to redistribute power equitably.” Guided by a disability justice approach to their work, the director of OARS develops program policies, procedures and educational materials related to providing academic and non-academic accommodations to eligible students with learning, psychological, and/or physical disabilities, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Amendment of 2008, and all other rules, regulations and guidelines. Additionally, working in conjunction with human resources, the director serves as the ADA Compliance Officer and coordinates with all other departments on compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the ADA as well state regulations pertaining to disabilities. Partnering with and leading an OARS Advisory Board, the director collaborates with faculty and staff to facilitate implementation of the accommodations process and to advance disability justice. This position also manages a diverse caseload and guides the assistant director of OARS on their caseload management and on their work to cultivate students’ academic success, personal empowerment, and educational revitalization through the Holistic Learning Program (HLP).

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated leadership in ADA, Section 504, and Title II compliance.
  • Experience in carrying out grievance procedures for ADA complaints.
  • Ability to foster dialogues between faculty and students and amongst various constituencies.
  • Ability to think creatively about how to best provide accommodations that are commensurate with Hampshire College pedagogical styles.
  • Ability to advocate for students’ accessibility needs across the various divisions of the college.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor OARS staff.
  • A strong understanding of how accessibility issues intersect with race, class, gender and sexual orientation.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.

PREFERRED

  • Ability to provide oral presentations, produce written reports, and internal communication materials to ensure greater understanding of accessibility needs and disability justice among students, staff and faculty.
  • Advanced word processing and data entry skills; familiarity with project management software.
  • Ability to serve as an advocate for students from all racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Working knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and holistic teaching pedagogy.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Advanced degree (e.g., MA, MS, JD, PhD)
  • Minimum of five years’ job-related experience.

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
