Schedule: 35 Hours a week

Pay Range/ Status: $53,892.80/ Exempt

Location: Hampshire College Campus in Amherst, MA

Reports to: Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, and Antiracism-Community Care and Wellbeing

Anticipated Start Date: August 1, 2024

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The assistant director of housing operations is a full-time, 12-month, live-on professional staff member who helps lead the department of residence life in its mission to cultivate and support students’ campus involvement and develop co-curricular programs that create an environment to encourage its community members to take personal responsibility to build a community that is fun, happy, vibrant, socially and civically engaged; and a community that values and contributes to each other’s safety, health, and wellness.

The assistant director is a student development practitioner who cares deeply about forming strong relationships and engaging in meaningful experiences with students, open to new and challenging experiences directed towards professional growth and committed to creating and contributing to an inclusive campus community. This position needs to be visible, maintain strong connections, and work successfully with students, faculty, staff, parents and external constituents. Candidates must feel comfortable working in an evolving organizational framework with shifting responsibilities.

The assistant director oversees the function of housing operations to ensure a well maintained, safe, healthy, and secure living environment for students. The assistant director does this through developing effective policies, processes and administrative functions for the department of residence life; strong communication and collaboration within residence life as well as across campus departments; supervision of office staff; and collaborative assessment and strategic planning within the department.

The assistant director will contribute to campus-wide educational initiatives, for instance the Community Days of Learning and New Student and Transfer Students Orientation that advance the College’s commitment to justice, equity and antiracism.

As a member of the residence life department, this position is essential to employee and community service and experience. The incumbent must feel comfortable working in an often fast-paced organizational framework with shifting and evolving responsibilities. This position collaborates with other residence life staff, and a variety of other college offices to meet the department goals, and further the mission of the department and the College. This position participates as a committed member and leader of the residence life department in college and division committee work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development. Availability to work occasional nights and weekends may be required.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Understanding of Student Development Theory, knowledge of higher education trends and best practices, administration and governance.
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong collaborative work ethic
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with computer programs: Housing Cloud, Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite and Colleague.
  • Ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

Preferred:

  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including communities of color and queer communities.
  • Familiarity with Housing Cloud.
  • On-call and crisis management experience.
  • Experience presenting to groups.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years’ job-related experience

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
