Reports to: Senior Associate Director of Admissions

We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 900 students. Each department at Hampshire College contributes to the collaborative culture of the organization and plays an important role in the success of the College. The department of admissions conducts extensive in-person travel and virtual meetings to recruit students who will embrace the Hampshire College community and the College’s distinctive approach to a liberal arts education. Through a holistic review of its global applicant pool, admissions seeks a diverse range of students who will consider how their education will innovate, pioneer, and profoundly and positively impact the common good. As part of the admissions team, you will be instrumental in the department achieving its mission and goals!
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The assistant director of admissions recruits in an assigned domestic geographic territory and manages a portfolio of office assignments. The incumbent works through in-person and virtual visits with schools and community organizations to build and sustain relationships with counselors who will connect students compatible with the Hampshire College mission and model. As with all admission counselors, this individual will also be on the office’s on-call duty roster to conduct information sessions and interviews and to respond to calls and e-mails to the general admissions phone line and e-mail address. During application reading season, the incumbent will read all applications from students in their territory and work with others in the office to identify applicants in their territory suitable for institutional aid for students from historically under-represented and marginalized communities.
As a member of the admissions office, this position is essential to the College’s overall recruitment effort. The incumbent must feel comfortable working in an often fast-paced organizational framework with shifting and evolving responsibilities. This position collaborates with other admissions and financial aid staff and a variety of other college offices to meet institutional goals and further the mission of the College. This position participates as a committed member and leader of the admissions team in college and division work, projects, meetings, events, and overall community development. The incumbent is encouraged to participate in various committees or governance of the College.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- The ability to persuasively and accurately communicate through writing and public speaking the unique pedagogical model of a Hampshire education and to convey in-depth knowledge of the social, academic, recreational, artistic, and humanitarian elements that define Hampshire College.
- An interest and understanding of how students from different countries, religions, backgrounds, and cultures enrich the experience for the entire Hampshire and Five College communities.
- Computer skills within a professional environment, including proficiency with Word, Excel, Google Docs, Zoom, and Power Point.
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti- racism. Strong knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and social justice.
- The ability to work independently and remotely but also within the framework of an in-person office setting where the assistant director will be collaborating with not only other admissions staff but staff, students, and faculty from every facet of the College community.
- Responsibility and accountability that ensures comprehensive response to all in-person, phone, and email queries to provide prospective students and families assurance that Hampshire College values them on an individual level and values their interest in a Hampshire education.
- A valid driver’s license.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Four-year college degree or equivalent
- Minimum two years of job-related experience
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
