Hampshire College invites applications for the position of Access Services Coordinator in the Harold F. Johnson Library. We are seeking a dynamic, service-oriented individual to play a key role in ensuring equitable access to library resources and spaces. We seek a colleague who is passionate about student success, collaborative work environments, and inclusive service.
The Access Services Coordinator oversees the daily operations of circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, and building access services in the library. The Coordinator plays a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and user-centered environment that reflects Hampshire’s educational values of innovation, independent inquiry, and community engagement. The Coordinator provides direct assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors while supervising a team of student employees. The position collaborates closely with library colleagues and across the Five College Consortium to ensure reliable, responsive, and innovative service delivery.
Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 900 students.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and participate in daily circulation activities including check-outs, returns, holds, and account management.
- Oversee course reserves, interlibrary loan (ILL), and stacks maintenance.
- Hire, train, schedule, and supervise a team of student workers.
- Maintain and configure circulation functions within the FOLIO library system.
- Monitor building access, security, and facility conditions.
- Represent Hampshire in Five College committees related to access services.
- Document procedures and contribute to library policies and improvements.
- Maintain a work schedule that includes weekend shifts and occasional evening shifts.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy, service-oriented environment.
- Comfort with basic computer applications (email, spreadsheets, integrated library systems, document management).
- Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in any field.
- Minimum of three years of experience in a customer service or library support role.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or coordinating the work of student employees, interns, or part-time staff.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience using an integrated library system (especially FOLIO).
- Prior experience in an academic library environment.
- Knowledge of resource sharing (interlibrary loan) workflows.
