Assistant Professor of African American Literature and Culture

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an assistant professor of African American literature and culture. This position will be located in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong record of research and teaching in the field of African American literature, with interdisciplinary grounding in African American historical, intellectual, and cultural traditions. Desired subfields include Black/Africana feminism/womanism, diaspora studies, queer of color studies, Caribbean studies, Black European studies, and/or Digital Humanities.

Hampshire College offers a competitive salary and excellent benefit program. The teaching load is 2-2, with the additional expectation of one-on-one advising and shared governance. The position will be connected with the college’s Africana Studies concentration and the James Baldwin Scholars program. Applicants should demonstrate how they would teach and advise students at different levels whose academic goals are interdisciplinary, and how they would advise and mentor historically underrepresented students (students of color, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, and first-generation college students).

This position will start in July 2017; Ph.D. is required. Review of applications will begin November 1, 2016, and continue until the position is filled.
