Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium with Amherst, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, seeks a highly accomplished financial professional for the position of controller.

The controller works closely with the vice president for finance and administration and treasurer (VPFA) to create, oversee, and track budget systems that address the College's needs and provide the highest level of transparency and accountability.  The controller supports the creation of divisional budgets that align to the College's mission and program planning and development; provides analysis for all key College auxiliary and support services to determine effectiveness and viability; and engages the campus community in a formal, articulated, and publishable budget effort, including the on-going monitoring of budgets. The controller is responsible for the preparation and execution of the annual operating budget and the compilation and integration of all related and necessary statistical data, and develops budget guidelines and analyzes trends and recommends financial strategies. The controller is the chief accounting officer of the College and is responsible for general accounting, accounts payable, purchasing, banking processes, financial and tax reporting, purchasing and business services, and internal audit.  The controller also oversees auxiliary services.  The controller with the VPFA generates and implements College financial and compliance-related policies and oversees accounting and record-keeping activity related to the College’s endowment funds including monitoring and reporting of investment performance, maintenance of unitized accounting database, remittance of gifts proceeds, determination of pooled investment’s market and share values, calculation of total return and assessment of budget impact. This position has supervisory responsibilities.

An advanced degree in accounting, business administration or public administration is required with a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible relevant accounting and financial management preferably in a higher education or not-for-profit setting. CPA certification is preferred, but not required. The qualified candidate must be skilled in accounting, leadership, interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal), decision making, analytical, and organizational.  This position also requires a proficiency with current technology and the ability to adapt to new technology.   The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to understand and synthesis complex financial performance data and present same to campus constituency.  They will have comprehensive knowledge of accounting, finance, and policy development, and a willingness to explore new and innovative methodologies, as well as an understanding of electronica financial systems.
